Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is an age related disease. Most often this disease affects people over 60 years of age. As with glaucoma, early detection is essential. There are 2 forms of macular degeneration, the dry form and the wet form. When a person has the dry form, it usually progresses slowly and may not cause significant vision loss. However, the dry form can develop into the more sight threatening wet form at any time. Our doctors will monitor patients with macular degeneration using the Ocular Coherence Tomographer [ HD-OCT] This instrument can detect any signs of blood vessel leakage that is the beginning of wet macular degeneration. We can also monitor the central vision for any distortion with the PHP field analyzer. There is no cure for macular degeneration, but if detected early treatments by the retinal specialist can stop the progression and often save vision.
